It can be very helpful to get the basic ideas for your tattoo design first. One improtant tthing to consider first is the placement of the design. Where the artwork will be inked on your body can determine the type, size and amount of detail the tattoo can have. It is also improtant to nail down the big ideas for thae tattoo so you do not change your ideas. Try to get at the deeper reason that you want to get the tattoo. Don't choose a design just because it looks cool. What do you feel the tattoo should represent? What kind of things to you want it to express about yourself? Having a tattoo that represents a lost loved one is going to be very different then a tattoo to show off your inner or outer sexiness. So get some ideas about what you want the tattoo to represent and also where you would like to place it on your body.
Look At Your Resources
Once you have narrowed down the basic concepts in the last step you will want to start going out and looking for source materials to draw or gather ideas from. There are many tattoo galleries online and also flickr.com has lots of great photos. Also there are a ton of great sites for tattoo enthusiasts that have lots of great resource materials. Want to get away fromt he computer? Then try some public place in the spring nad check out real tattoos that people have. Local coffe houses are also great places to sit and people watch and look for tattoos. If you want to get a little travel in and go for a whole day excursion you could also try a tattoo convention. There is one in almost every major city in the US. Magazines and bookstores are also great places to find a wonderful source of tattoo ideas. There are tons of great books and magaizines that have come out in recent years that have wonderful pictures of tattoos and designs. If you choose to do this online don't forget to print out some of the designs that you really like. If you are online you might just want to print the tattoos that you like.
Rough Sketch Your Tattoo Design
Your next step is to compile all of your resrouce materails together. Now you can start to look through and try to identify common thread in the designs. Next start your drawing. Try not to worry abou thte final tattoo design but instead just draw. As you start sketching dont freak out and instead just focus on drawing the themes and dieas that you found in common between the designs you liked. Your drawing wills tart to become more refined as you bring clarity to the design you want. Over repeated drawing and refining your drawing you should start to come up with a design you like.
If Nothing Else Works Do This
Still stuck and dont have a design for your tattoo? Then seek some outside help. Silly not a art therapist but instead a professional tattoo artist. Take your time and check out your local tattos shops. Look for a tattoo artist that is wiling to hear your ideas and then do the final design work for you. Explain your ideas and bring your research and sketches into the person. Most tattoo artist jump at the ideas of doing custom design work. Especially if you alread have most of the design done.
